Have you ever seen the movie ‘Speed’? You know, the mundane action film about the runaway bus that is set to blow up if they fail to keep it at a certain speed.Have you ever wondered, if the movie was a real story, how many died, how much was destroyed, by all the attempts to safe the few on the bus?
It is the hollywood effect; They strive to safe a few of the main characters by any means possible, who knows how many are killed, or how much damage is done in the mean time?
This effect was brought back to my mind last week, when Peter Singer wrote a thought provoking piece about a child being saved by the Catholic church, despite there being no chance of the child ever living the life of any average boy.I am not sure the child will even live more then a year, if that.
His piece hit the nail on the head, as it were. That is a stupid saying, but anyways, he is right.
The money they will save on this human vegetable could well be used in far superior ways in which a bunch of children could be fed, and in a sense, saved.
Sure, they have the right, as do the parents, to spend whatever money they want on whatever they want.It is just a pity they would rather use a vegetable to prove some point about them caring about life.
